Since that first trip in 2019, we’ve travelled to quite a few countries on our own — and not just the easy ones like Japan or Austria.

Even Iran, with all its complexities, was easier explore on our own than Egypt.

And if you’re a history nerd or architecture tragic like me, you’ll end up adding things no regular guidebook covers.

For me, it was New Gourna Village — Hassan Fathy’s legacy. I studied his work the same year I learned how to lay bricks, so skipping it wasn’t an option.

Ashrith wanted to visit Nabta Playa (his gaming obsession), but YET explained it’s in a restricted military zone now — that saved us a day chasing the impossible.

Even in Luxor, I was set on visiting Ramesseum, until they gently suggested Medinet Habu instead. “It’s better preserved and more colourful,” they said — and they were right.

They also recommended a hot air balloon ride over Luxor. We nearly skipped it, thinking it’d be unsafe or just another Cappadocia copy. It turned out to be one of our favourite experiences.
