Sim Local eSIM Review 2026: My Experience After 3 Trips

Reliable mobile data can completely change how a trip feels — from finding your hotel to booking last-minute tickets when plans shift.

The era of physical SIM for data is slowly vanishing with eSIM replacing them

But with so many travel eSIM brands promising to be the best, it’s not always obvious which one will actually work well when you land.

That’s why I started testing eSIMs myself. I’ve travelled to more than 24 countries, and after years of buying physical SIM cards at airports, I finally switched to eSIMs in 2023.

Since then, I have used Sim Local across five countries during my 3 different trips.

I first used it for a week in the UK (England) in 2023.

Then I used it again for a full month in Europe in 2025, across Spain, Portugal, and Luxembourg.

Most recently, in February 2026, I used it for my Cambodia trip.

This helped me see how it performs in real travel situations.

Here’s my updated 2026 review after now three trips with Sim Local.

Plus, I will also compare it with other well-known brands

I will tell you exactly why I keep going back to Sim Local, despite it not being the cheapest, and why it is the most reliable and transparent eSIM I have used.

Is Sim Local the best travel eSIM in 2026?

From my own three trips — a week in London and a month across Portugal, Spain and Luxembourg, Cambodia — Sim Local has been the most reliable travel eSIM I’ve used so far.

It’s not always the cheapest, but it consistently gave me the best balance of network quality, quick support and transparent package + pricing with no hidden charges.

Who Is Sim Local & why it matters for travellers

Sim Local is a UK-based company that began in 2011 at Dublin Airport, helping travellers get connected as soon as they landed.

That’s exactly how I found them in 2023.

After an 8-hour flight to London, my home SIM’s roaming wouldn’t work.

ashrith standing beside thames river in front of charles bridge

Tired and frustrated, I walked up to a Sim Local kiosk at Heathrow, and their staff installed an eSIM for me within minutes.

It worked instantly! Honestly it saved not just my morning, but my entire 7 day business trip.

That experience stuck with me, especially because many eSIM brands online don’t even mention who runs them.

Sim Local, on the other hand, has physical airport stores, has been around for over a decade and continues to expand.

This made them feel far more trustworthy than the random app-only brands that appear out of nowhere.

My real experience: Sim Local eSIM Across UK, Europe & Asia

I’ve now used Sim Local on two trips: 1 week in London (2023) — my first ever eSIM and 1 month across Portugal, Spain and Luxembourg (2025) — full data + calls plan.

And again in Cambodia in 2026 February.

Here’s everything worth knowing from both trips.

Real human support: WhatsApp replies in Under 10 minutes

I received WhatsApp replies in around 5–10 minutes while choosing my plan. As someone who likes asking questions before purchasing, this immediately made the process feel easier and more reassuring.

They also have outlets in Heathrow, Athens and Dublin airports.

Strong coverage even in small towns & remote borders

My Europe plan ran on Orange, and the coverage stayed strong everywhere — big cities, Algarve beaches and even small villages in Luxembourg.

And my wife had to look for food joints that serve veg dishes across Portugal – Smaller towns like Alcobaça which isn’t too popular like Porto.

These are places where many global-network eSIMs usually weaken, but Sim Local stayed stable throughout our routes.

Global connectivity in 150+ countries: including Asia

SimLocal travel eSIMs are not limited to Europe. They work across most continents, including Asia, South and North America, and Africa, except Antarctica.

I used one during my week-long trip to Cambodia and had reliable network coverage on the islands as well as the mainland.

It even stayed connected during my layover in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Transparent website: Know exactly what’s included before you buy

I also found their website and app genuinely user friendly.

The plan pages clearly show every destination included, even smaller regions and islands.

This helped when we travelled to Madeira, because Sim Local explicitly listed it under the plan, so I knew it would work before buying.

Data + Calls Plan: The option that saved us in Portugal

We picked a Sim Local plan with a local phone number for Portugal trip. We didn’t use it everyday, but when we needed to call restaurants and accommodations, it saved us time.

Automatic border switching — No settings, no stress

Standing in Luxembourg, looking at Germany at Schengen village

In the beautiful village Schengen — where Luxembourg, France and Germany meet — my phone switched networks automatically as we walked. I never touched the settings.

Money-back guarantee: Buy in advance without the risk

Buying early felt safe because Sim Local refunds non-activated plans. After being stuck with a useless eSIM from another provider in the past, this was a big relief.

Sim Local travel eSIM felt genuinely safe and reliable

Some eSIM apps I’ve tried in the past triggered spam texts soon after activation, which always worried me.

With Sim Local, I never received a single unwanted message or call.

Everything felt clean and private, which made me comfortable using banking apps, OTPs and airline logins.

Honest downsides: What Sim Local could improve

No family bundle yet
A discounted bundle for couples or families would be handy, but you can still buy multiple eSIMs under the same email without any issues.

Limited calls options on very short plans
Sim Local offers more data + calls plans than Airalo, but if your trip is under 7–10 days and you need a local number, choices are still limited. I wish there were at least one calls plan for short stays.

A quick signal pause when crossing borders
When you move from one country to another, the eSIM may take 5–10 seconds to connect to the next local network. This happens with every travel eSIM brand, so it isn’t really a Sim Local-specific issue.

Not the cheapest, but great value
Sim Local isn’t the lowest-price brand, but the clear pricing, strong networks and fast human support make it worth the extra few pounds.

Sim Local vs Airalo vs Holafly vs Nomad: Full comparison 2026

This is an objective comparison based on what most travellers actually care about: customer support, network quality, pricing, transparency and refunds.

These are the practical differences between Sim Local, Airalo, Holafly and Nomad.

Note: I’m not comparing physical SIM cards here. They come with their own headaches, and I’ve covered that in my full guide on physical SIM cards vs eSIMs.

PC: Simlocal

Customer support

  • Sim Local: WhatsApp, phone, email and live chat — and all with real humans.
  • Airalo: live chat + email — often slower responses.
  • Holafly: WhatsApp + chat — helpful, but not consistently fast.
  • Nomad: chatbot only, no human support for urgent issues.

Winner: Sim Local — the only brand offering fast human support across multiple channels.

Network quality

  • Sim Local: connects to top local providers like Orange, Vodafone or O2 depending on the country.
  • Airalo / Holafly / Nomad: often rely on their own global network setups, which may not always the strongest in smaller towns or remote areas.

Local partnerships generally mean more stable coverage during border crossings, rural travel and day-to-day navigation.

Winner: Sim Local — stronger stability across cities, towns and multi-country routes.

Pricing and plan variety

  • Sim Local: competitive medium–long duration plans, including data + calls + SMS; minimum 10 GB for 7 days — enough for real-world use.
  • Airalo: cheapest tiny plans (1–3 GB), but larger plans grow expensive quickly.
  • Holafly: unlimited plans for short trips; speeds may throttle after heavy use.
  • Nomad: budget-friendly but limited plan types.

Best for ultra-small data plans: Airalo

Airalo offers the cheapest tiny plans, but a 3 GB plan for a week isn’t enough for most travellers who rely on maps, messaging and social media. You will almost always need to buy extra data, which raises the final cost of Airalo plan.

Best for short-term unlimited: Holafly

Holafly is useful if you want unlimited data for a very short trip. However, many travellers report that speeds slow after heavy usage, forcing them to buy an upgrade or top-up.

Best overall value for real travel use: Sim Local

Sim Local’s unlimited plans come with up to 10GB of high-speed data per day, which is more than enough for most travellers.

Even on my busiest days especially when I drove longer distance across Portugal and used Google Maps, WhatsApp calls, bookings, and work emails, I never came close to hitting that limit.

Screenshot showing SimLocal global eSIM plans with different data options, prices, validity days and network providers for international travellers

Like all unlimited plans, Sim Local applies a Fair Usage Policy. If daily usage consistently goes beyond 10GB, speeds may be reduced, or in rare cases, service may be temporarily suspended.

For most travellers, this won’t be an issue unless you are streaming heavily or hotspotting all day.

Hidden charges and unexpected top-ups

  • Sim Local: no forced top-ups, no throttling, no surprise charges.
  • Airalo: small plans run out quickly ? top-ups become necessary.
  • Holafly: unlimited plans may slow unless you pay to boost speeds.
  • Nomad: some plan details can be unclear.

Winner: Sim Local — the clearest, most predictable pricing.

Refund policy

  • Sim Local: refunds available on non-activated plans with a simple request
  • Airalo: refunds only if the eSIM is faulty
  • Holafly: case-by-case evaluation
  • Nomad: rarely provides refunds

How to buy & activate a Sim Local eSIM (5 simple steps)

Sim Local works just like any other travel eSIM, but the process is simple:

Step 1: Choose your plan on the website and complete the payment.
Step 2: You’ll receive a QR code by email.
Step 3: Install the eSIM at home using Wi-Fi — it takes a few minutes.
Step 4: Once you land, turn on data roaming for the Sim Local eSIM.
Step 5: Use your phone as normal across all supported countries.

That’s genuinely all there is to it. The Sim Local app and website have clear instructions if you need it – All it took me is 5 minutes from purchasing to installing.

How to choose the right Sim Local plan for your trip

Start with your destination

Your eSIM must match your entire route, not just the country you land in.

Pick your destination!

Choose the duration

Sim Local offers 7, 15, 30, 31, 60 and 90-day plans.

screenshot from simlocal website showing various. duration plan
It is super easy to filter and select what you need on Simlocal website

If your trip is 21–24 days, a 30-day plan is almost always cheaper and far easier than buying two shorter ones.

Sim Local doesn’t allow top-ups on most plans, so:

15-day + 7-day plan = more expensive+more effort mid-trip

I learnt this while planning Portugal and Spain initially — two small plans would’ve cost more than one 30-day plan, and reinstalling a second eSIM on day 15 would have been a headache.

For anything slightly over two weeks, the 30-day plan is the simplest option.

Picking between data-only and data + calls

For most travellers, data-only is genuinely enough. Here’s why:

  • WhatsApp is used everywhere — even hotels, tour organisers and taxi drivers prefer it.
  • Our kayaking organiser in Portugal ONLY used WhatsApp, never normal calls.
  • All essentials (Maps, Uber, Bolt, email, social media, banking + OTPs) work perfectly on data-only.
  • It’s cheaper and avoids paying for a phone number you barely use.

We chose a data + calls plan but used the local number only twice — both situations could’ve easily been WhatsApp calls. So for us, the extra cost wasn’t really necessary.

Choose a data + calls plan only if you:

  • are travelling longer than a month
  • need to call hotels or tour operators who don’t use WhatsApp
  • are a digital nomad who needs a proper local number for work or verifications

Choose unlimited vs limited data plans

Unlimited sounds tempting, but it’s not always worth it.

Trips under 10–14 days Unlimited is convenient.
Trips longer than 15 days – A limited plan is much better value.

Most travellers don’t use as much data as they think. Even heavy days rarely cross 1 GB per day.

On our month-long Europe trip, we chose 100 GB with call+sms option and didn’t even use 25% of it — despite:

  • Daily WhatsApp calls
  • Google Maps everywhere
  • Bolt rides in portugal
  • Social media
  • Booking activities on GetYourGuide

This proved unlimited esim plans wasn’t necessary.

If you want a budget-friendly option for long trips, choose a 30–50 GB plan without call+sms plan, which comfortably covers three to four weeks.

What to double-check before purchasing your Sim Local eSIM

Before buying your Sim Local eSIM, a few quick checks can save you hassle later:

Make sure your plan covers every country you’re visiting.
A France-only plan won’t work in Monaco, and a Germany plan won’t work once you cross into Austria.

Pick a data size that fits your real usage.
Most people use 300 MB a day. Even at 1 GB a day, you only need 7–10 GB for a week or 20–30 GB for a month. Since Sim Local doesn’t support top-ups, pick a realistic size — not an oversized plan.

Check that your phone supports eSIM.
Use the compatibility list on Sim Local’s website to avoid last-minute airport stress.

Use Sim Local’s step-by-step installation guide.
It’s simple, and helpful if it’s your first time installing an eSIM.

Rename your new eSIM inside your settings.

Who is Sim Local best For & who should look elsewhere

Couples and families – Better than hotspot sharing when you split up. Because we had two different eSIMs, we stayed connected easily when we took two separate hiking routes in Sintra.

Digital nomads – The longer 31–90 day plans, strong networks and a proper local number make it suitable for work calls, client communication and verification codes.

Business travellers – Ideal for 7–15 day work trips. It kept me connected throughout my London business trip even when hotel Wi-Fi failed.

Road-trippers – Automatic border switching is a big advantage. In Schengen village, my phone jumped between France, Germany and Luxembourg without touching any settings.

Senior travellers – Simple installation and quick WhatsApp support make it a great fit for older travellers. I will definitely use Sim Local for my parents; I can install it for them at home, and all they need to do when they land is switch from their home SIM to the new eSIM.

Common questions travellers ask about Sim Local

Can I buy multiple eSIMs from Sim Local with one email address?

Yes — each purchase arrives as a separate email with its own QR code, so it’s easy to manage plans for different travellers or devices.

Is the Sim Local app necessary to install the eSIM?

No. The QR code in your email is enough. The app is optional, but it makes buying easier if you’re buying directly from your phone.

Can I choose my network provider with Sim Local?

It depends on the plan.
With local plans, Sim Local connects you to a specific operator, such as EE in the UK or AU in Japan. These plans work only on that network.

With SmartRoam or multi-network plans, multiple networks are supported. In these cases, the supported operators are clearly listed before purchase, and users may be able to manually switch networks if the plan allows it.

Otherwise, the eSIM connects automatically to the strongest available network.

Does Sim Local support hotspot and tethering?

Yes, hotspot and tethering work normally. This helped us connect our iPad several times. But unlimited plans are subject to a 10GB per day Fair Usage Policy, which also applies when hotspotting.

Check prices of Unlimited data plans on Sim Local and don’t forget to use code VACAYWORK to get flat 5% discount on your purchase.

My verdict: Why Sim Local is still my go-to Travel eSIM in 2026

Sim Local has been the most dependable travel eSIM I’ve used so far.

Traveller using a mobile phone inside a traditional restaurant in Madeira, sitting at a dining table with tiled walls and wooden interiors

Both in London and during my month across Portugal, Spain and Luxembourg, it kept me connected without any stress — no random top-ups, no speed drops and no confusion about what was included.

What really makes me stick with them is the combination of transparent pricing, strong local networks, and fast human support.

Getting a reply from customer care within minutes especially on Whatsapp while travelling is incredibly reassuring, especially compared to brands that rely on slow chats or bots.
