Hiroshima, the city that rose from the ashes of the 1945 nuclear bomb, is now one of Japan’s prettiest cities, with scenic canals and a lively vibe.
From nightlife and peace memorials to amazing food and castles, there’s so much to do here.
While it’s not as big or pricey as Tokyo, where you stay in Hiroshima can make or break your budget—Japanese cities aren’t exactly cheap!
Picking the right neighbourhood near the spots we wanted to see (without blowing the budget) was tricky for us too.
So, we’ve rounded up the best areas and hotels in Hiroshima to help you plan your stay without any stress or confusion.

Overview of Hiroshima Neighbourhoods
For comparison, Hiroshima covers an area of about 900 square kilometres, while Tokyo spans 2,100 square kilometres, and the historical Kyoto is slightly smaller at under 830 square kilometres.
Broadly, Hiroshima can be divided into two main areas: Downtown and the JR Station district.
Downtown is where you’ll find Hiroshima’s highlights, including the castle, riverfront views, shrines, and war memorials.
Everything is conveniently located, so we walked everywhere—from the Atomic dome and war Memorial or to Okonomimura for the delicious Hiroshima style pancake”Okonomiyaki” —enjoying the city on foot.
